Tranexamic Acid in Skincare: The 5% Ceiling Is Chemistry, Not Marketing

Why every tranexamic acid serum stops at 5 percent, how the ingredient is described to work, and the regulatory detail most brands leave out.


Tranexamic acid in skincare is a synthetic amino acid analogue, borrowed from medicine, used in cosmetics for uneven tone. It appears at 5 percent in almost every serum that contains it, and that figure is a solubility ceiling rather than a marketing decision.

Past roughly that point, tranexamic acid stops dissolving in a water-based formula. What does not dissolve can come out of solution and crystallise, which is a stability problem rather than a stronger product. The number on the carton is chemistry.

Where the ingredient came from

Tranexamic acid began as a medicine. Taken by mouth it slows the breakdown of blood clots, and it has been used that way for decades to reduce bleeding.

The skin story arrived by accident rather than by plan. Patients taking it for other reasons were observed to have changes in facial pigmentation, and topical cosmetic versions followed that observation.

Hold on to the distinction between the two. An oral prescription drug and a cosmetic applied to the face are different objects with different rules, different doses and different considerations. The shared name does not make them the same thing.

How tranexamic acid in skincare is described to work

The mechanism runs through the same pathway in both settings, which is the neat part of the story.

UV exposure activates plasmin in skin cells. Plasmin sits upstream of the signals that tell pigment cells to switch on and produce melanin. Tranexamic acid interferes with that activation, so the instruction to make pigment is quieter than it would otherwise be.

Three consequences follow from that mechanism.

  • It is not an exfoliant. Nothing is being sanded off, so there is no flaking phase and no immediate change in texture.
  • It is not a bleach. Pigment already sitting in the upper layers is not removed by it. You are waiting on normal cell turnover to carry that pigment up and out.
  • It is upstream work. That is why it is generally described as gentle, and also why nothing about it is fast.

Uneven tone has several causes, and they do not all respond to the same thing. We separate them in what actually fades a dark spot.

The 5 percent ceiling, explained properly

Look at ten tranexamic acid serums and you will find most of them clustered between 2 and 5 percent. Brands rarely explain why, and the silence invites the wrong conclusion: that 5 percent is a cautious choice and someone braver would go higher.

The real reason is solubility. Tranexamic acid is water-soluble, but every solute has a limit, and this one runs out of room in a typical cosmetic base around that level.

Push past it and the formula does not get stronger. It gets unstable. Excess material that has nowhere to dissolve can drop out of solution over time, especially when a product gets cold in transit or sits on a shelf for a year. You see it as grit, haze or crystals. Formulators reach for encapsulation and other tricks to get around the ceiling, and those add their own complications.

Solubility ceiling versus tolerance ceiling

This is a different kind of limit from the one that governs niacinamide, and the comparison is the clearest way to understand both.

Two ingredients, two ceilings that look identical on a carton, two completely different reasons. A number tells you very little until you know which kind of limit produced it. What is in our 02 ampoule, and one uncomfortable detail

The 02 brightening ampoule contains tranexamic acid at 50,000 ppm, which is 5 percent. Niacinamide is in there too, at 2 percent. Those are formulation figures and nothing more.

Now the detail most brands would leave out.

The product carries a Korean functional cosmetic registration in the brightening category. That registration does not ride on the tranexamic acid the product is named after. It rides on the niacinamide at 2 percent, because niacinamide is on Korea's list of recognised ingredients for that category and tranexamic acid is not.

Two things follow, and both are worth stating plainly.

The first is that a Korean functional category is a Korean legal object. It does not transfer to a United States label, and we do not present it as though it does. Where tranexamic acid does not belong

Melasma is a medical condition. It is driven by hormones, heat and light, it recurs, and it is managed by a clinician over years. It is not a shopping decision, and no cosmetic should be sold to you as a solution for it.

The same goes for pigmentation that follows acne or injury, for anything changing shape or colour, and for any patch that appeared without an obvious cause. Those belong with a dermatologist first.

A cosmetic containing tranexamic acid is a cosmetic. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition, and we will not write it as though it were.

Using it, and the one step that matters more

Tranexamic acid is comfortable to layer. It has no low pH requirement of its own, it is not an exfoliant, and it does not compete with the usual actives.

  1. Introduce it alone. One new product at a time, held for two weeks, or you will never know what caused what.
  2. Sequence by texture. Water-thin first, richer after. The general order is in the skincare layering reference.
  3. Measure in months. Anything to do with pigment is slow, because you are waiting on cells that were already loaded before you began.
  4. Wear sunscreen. The mechanism starts at a UV-triggered signal. Continuing to trigger it daily works against the entire point.

Sunscreen is not an upsell here. It is the only step in this list with an obvious case for everybody, and it is the one that makes the rest coherent.

The variable nobody prints

Every number in this article describes what is in the bottle. None of them describe what gets into skin, and those are separate questions.

The outer layer of your skin is a barrier and its job is to keep things out. It does not evaluate your ingredient list. Most of what you apply stays on top, dries, and ends up on your pillowcase.

Frequently asked questions

Why is tranexamic acid always 5 percent?

Because that is roughly where it stops dissolving in a water-based cosmetic. Above the limit the excess can come out of solution and crystallise, which makes the product unstable rather than stronger. It is a property of the molecule, not a cautious marketing choice.

Can I use tranexamic acid with niacinamide or vitamin C?

Yes. They work through different mechanisms, so there is nothing to manage between them, and formulas containing more than one are common. Our 02 ampoule contains both tranexamic acid and niacinamide. Introduce them as one product rather than three, so a reaction has one obvious source.

Is topical tranexamic acid the same as the oral drug?

No. The oral form is a prescription medicine with medical indications and medical considerations, taken under supervision. A cosmetic applied to the face is a different product with a different dose and a different regulatory status. Do not treat one as a substitute for the other.

How long does tranexamic acid take to do anything?

Longer than most people expect. It works upstream of pigment production rather than removing pigment already present, so you are waiting on normal cell turnover. Judge it over months of consistent use with daily sunscreen, not over a few weeks.

Is tranexamic acid safe for sensitive skin?

It is generally described as well tolerated, because it is not an acid in the exfoliating sense and needs no unusual pH. That is a statement about the ingredient and not about a specific formula, since everything else in the bottle matters too. Patch test on the jaw for a few days first.

Will it treat my melasma?
