Slugging: What Sealing Your Skin Overnight Does and Does Not Do

Slugging seals skin under petrolatum overnight. Occlusion cuts water loss by over 98 percent, but it adds nothing. What it does, and who should skip it.


Slugging means coating your face with a thin layer of petrolatum ointment as the final step of a nighttime routine. It works by occlusion. Petrolatum at 5 percent or more cuts transepidermal water loss by over 98 percent. It seals in water that is already there. It adds nothing and delivers nothing of its own.

What Is Slugging?

Slugging is the practice of sealing your face under an ointment overnight. The name comes from the glossy trail the ointment leaves behind, like a slug's. The base is almost always petrolatum, the ingredient most people know as petroleum jelly.

The habit spread from K-beauty communities to TikTok, where it became a viral staple. A 2022 report in Clinics in Dermatology screened the top 50 slugging videos on the platform (Pagani et al., 2022). Only 18 of them, 36.7 percent, were rated educational, meaning they discussed risks or benefits at all. Most were experience clips. Popularity ran far ahead of explanation.

Any plain petrolatum ointment qualifies for the technique. Some products add lanolin, glycerin, or panthenol on top of the petrolatum base. The extras change the feel more than the mechanism. The seal is the point.

The pitch is simple. Seal the skin at night, hold water in, wake up softer. The physics supports part of that pitch. The rest needs boundaries, and that is what this article is for.

How Slugging Works: Occlusion and Water Loss

Skin loses water to the air constantly. Dermatologists call this transepidermal water loss, or TEWL. The loss happens through the stratum corneum, the stack of flattened cells and lipids that forms your outermost layer.

Hydration in that layer is actively managed. Lamellar lipids slow the passage of water. The layered structure forces water to travel a long, tortuous path. Natural moisturizing factor, produced inside corneocytes from the breakdown of the protein filaggrin, binds water in place (Rawlings and Harding, 2004). When these systems fall behind, skin turns dry and flaky.

An occlusive helps from the outside. It is a surface film that physically blocks evaporation. Petrolatum is the strongest occlusive on record. At a minimum concentration of 5 percent, it reduces TEWL by more than 98 percent (Sethi et al., 2016). Lanolin, mineral oil, and silicones manage only 20 to 30 percent in the same review.

The same review draws a line worth remembering. Humectants pull water, and can even raise TEWL by drawing it up from the dermis, where it evaporates away. Occlusives keep water. That is why the two are usually paired, and why slugging alone is half a strategy.

One more nuance: petrolatum is not plastic wrap. In a study of human volunteers with solvent-damaged skin, petrolatum-treated sites recovered barrier function faster than untreated sites (Ghadially et al., 1992). The ointment did not sit on top as a sealed sheet. It penetrated the spaces between corneocytes at every level of the stratum corneum. Petrolatum slows water loss dramatically while still letting the surface function.

What Slugging Does Not Do

Occlusion retains. It does not supply. Petrolatum contains no water, so it cannot hydrate skin that has none to keep. Slugging over dry, unprepped skin mostly seals in the dryness. The technique works best on damp or freshly moisturized skin.

It does not nourish either. Petrolatum is a purified blend of hydrocarbons. No vitamins, no peptides, no building blocks your skin can use. Every benefit it produces comes from physics, not chemistry.

It is also not a delivery system. A review of occlusion research found that covering skin often, but not always, increases percutaneous absorption of chemicals applied under the cover (Zhai and Maibach, 2001). That effect cuts both ways. It can help a bland moisturizer do more. It can also push an exfoliating acid or a retinoid into irritation territory.

Slugging is an 8 hour occlusion event over whatever you applied last. Neither one turns the skin barrier into an open door. Is Slugging Good for Skin?

For dry, flaky, wind-chapped, or over-exfoliated skin, the evidence leans yes. Petrolatum also appears to do more than block evaporation. Researchers applied it under occlusion in 36 healthy subjects and 13 people with moderate atopic dermatitis (Czarnowicki et al., 2016). Antimicrobial peptides went up. So did filaggrin and loricrin, two key barrier proteins. Stratum corneum thickness increased. The paper's title puts the word inert in quotation marks for a reason.

There is a caution in the barrier literature worth knowing. Water flux through skin is itself the repair signal. In animal work with hairless mice, covering damaged skin with a waterproof membrane blocked the lipid synthesis needed for recovery (Grubauer et al., 1989). A vapor-permeable cover allowed normal repair. Petrolatum behaves like the second case, not the first. It leaves enough water movement for repair to continue, which matches the faster recovery measured in humans.

Constant overhydration is its own problem. Occlusion blocks normal ventilation of the skin surface, and prolonged waterlogging compromises barrier function (Zhai and Maibach, 2002). Who Should Skip Slugging

Occlusion changes the surface ecosystem, not just the water balance. In a classic experiment, researchers occluded human skin continuously for five days (Aly et al., 1978). Bacterial counts rose from about 180 per square centimeter to roughly 4.5 million by day five. Surface pH climbed from 4.38 to 7.05. One night under ointment is much milder than five days under film. The direction of change is still the point. Sealed skin runs warmer, wetter, and less acidic, and microbes multiply.

Acne-prone skin. An overnight seal raises humidity around follicles that are already congested. If your baseline issue is closed comedones, slugging adds risk with little upside. Test one small area for a week before committing your whole face.

Fungal-acne-prone skin. Malassezia, the yeast behind fungal acne, is a lipophilic organism that lives inside hair follicles. It becomes symptomatic as itchy papules and pustules (Henning et al., 2023). A warm, humid, lipid-rich seal is close to an ideal environment for a lipid-metabolizing yeast. Skip slugging entirely if this is your pattern.

Skin with an active condition. Rosacea, perioral dermatitis, infected breakouts, or anything raw or weeping belongs with a board-certified dermatologist, not with a technique from a video. Occlusion can also change how a prescription on your skin behaves. That is a conversation for your doctor, not a comment section.

How to Slug Without Causing Problems

If your skin is dry, intact, and not congested, slugging is low risk when done deliberately. Here is the careful version.

  • Start with water in the skin. Apply the ointment to damp skin or over a bland moisturizer. The moisturizer literature is explicit that occlusive oils belong on moist skin (Sethi et al., 2016). Sealing a dry surface accomplishes little.
  • Keep strong actives out from under it. No exfoliating acids and no retinoids underneath. Occlusion can amplify absorption and irritation alike.
  • Use a thin layer. A pea-sized amount spreads across the whole face. A visible white mask is too much product.
  • Make it occasional. Treat slugging as a recovery tool for dry stretches, winter wind, or a stripped feeling after cleansing. It is not a nightly default.
  • Put it last. An occlusive ends the routine. Anything layered on top of it is mostly wasted. The full sequencing logic is in our routine order guide.

Judge results by feel over a week, not by one morning. Softer, calmer, less tight skin means it is working. New bumps, itch, or a dull waterlogged look mean it is not for you.

Is slugging good for acne-prone skin?

Usually not. Occlusion raises surface humidity and pH, and microbes multiply quickly under a seal. In published occlusion research, bacterial counts climbed from roughly 180 per square centimeter into the millions within days. One night is milder, but the direction holds. If you congest easily, patch test a small area first or skip the trend entirely.

Does slugging make skincare absorb better?

Sometimes. Occlusion often, but not always, increases percutaneous absorption of what sits beneath it, according to a published review. That is not automatically good. It helps bland hydrators and amplifies irritants with equal indifference. Slugging is not a delivery system. It is a lid. Choose what goes under the lid carefully, and keep strong actives out.

Can you slug every night?

Most skin does not need it nightly. Occlusion blocks normal ventilation of the surface, and constant overhydration measurably weakens the stratum corneum. Reserve slugging for stretches when skin feels dry, tight, or flaky. If your face looks pale, soggy, or bumpy after regular use, cut the frequency or stop. Dry winter weeks are the natural use case.

Is petroleum jelly safe for your face?

Cosmetic-grade petrolatum is purified and has decades of dermatology research behind it, including human studies where it sped up barrier recovery after damage. Safe in general does not mean suitable for everyone. Acne-prone and fungal-acne-prone skin can react to the occlusion itself. For any active skin condition, ask a board-certified dermatologist before sealing anything in.

Should you slug over retinol?

Caution applies. Occlusion can increase absorption of whatever sits under it, and retinoids are dose-sensitive irritants. Sealing one in overnight can turn a tolerable routine into a red, flaking week. If you use a retinoid, slug on the nights you skip it rather than layering the two. Your skin gets the recovery without the amplified dose.

Does slugging replace moisturizer?

No. A moisturizer combines humectants that attract water with emollients and occlusives that hold it. Petrolatum only performs the last job. It contains no water and attracts none. Slugging is a topper that locks in whatever hydration your routine already built. On its own, over bare dry skin, it preserves the dryness along with everything else.
