Sheet Mask vs Ampoule: Occlusion vs Concentration

A sheet mask is occlusion. An ampoule is concentration. What each format does, how long to wear one, and why neither opens the skin barrier.

A sheet mask and an ampoule do different jobs. The mask is occlusion. A wet sheet holds water against your face for fifteen or twenty minutes. The ampoule is concentration. A small dose of named actives at figures printed on the label. Neither format opens the barrier that stops both.

What does a sheet mask actually do to skin?

It holds water at the surface and slows evaporation. The sheet is a carrier. The essence is the product. The fabric keeps that essence in contact with skin instead of letting it dry off.

Occlusion is a real physical state with measurable effects. Zhai and Maibach reviewed them in Skin Pharmacology and Applied Skin Physiology in 2001. Occlusion changes hydration status, barrier permeability, epidermal lipids and microbial flora. Their summary of absorption is worth reading twice. Occlusion "often, but not always" increases percutaneous absorption of applied chemicals.

A 2024 randomized study in the Journal of Tissue Viability put numbers on the wear itself. Wang and colleagues tested three mask types across four durations of 5, 15, 25 and 40 minutes. Hydration and transepidermal water loss rose first, then fell. Sebum rose with every mask type, most of all after 40 minutes.

What is an ampoule doing that a mask is not?

An ampoule is defined by its numbers, not by a wear time. It is a small volume of concentrate you dose yourself. The word carries no legal meaning in the United States. We cover that in ampoule vs serum and what is an ampoule.

What the format does carry is the habit of printing figures. Niacinamide at 21 percent. Tranexamic Acid at 5 percent. Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 at 500 ppm. Our guide to what ppm means covers how to read those.

A figure on a label is a dose at the surface. It is not a dose inside skin. Ong and Goh reviewed niacinamide delivery in Drug Delivery and Translational Research in 2024. Their review consolidates the strategies formulators use to raise its skin permeation. It treats permeation behaviour as central to formulation design. A label percentage is a separate quantity from that.

Sheet mask vs ampoule, side by side

Property Sheet mask Ampoule
Main mechanism Occlusion and surface hydration Concentration of named actives
What you control Wear time Dose and frequency
Typical session 15 to 20 minutes, then discard A few drops, layered or paired with a device
Actives usually stated as figures Rarely Often
Container Single-use foil pouch Dropper bottle, pump, or sealed glass vial
Cost per use Low Higher per milliliter
Route through the stratum corneum None of its own; occlusion only alters the existing one None of its own

Read the last row twice. It is the row that ends the argument. Both formats stop at the same wall. Our piece on why your serum is not absorbing describes it.

Does occlusion help a serum absorb?

Sometimes, and never selectively. Water changes the stratum corneum. A hydrated stratum corneum is a more permeable one.

Ogawa-Fuse and colleagues measured the effect in Contact Dermatitis in 2019. They applied water patches to forearm skin for three hours in ten subjects. Raman spectroscopy found higher water content throughout the layer. Multiphoton microscopy found changed structure between corneocytes. Absorption of the test compound methyl nicotinate rose.

Here is the part brands leave out. Occlusion does not choose what it lets through. Zhai and Maibach set out the adverse side in a second 2001 overview in Contact Dermatitis. Occlusion increases penetration of other chemicals and antigens, and may worsen irritant and allergic contact dermatitis.

Length of occlusion is the variable that turns a benefit into a problem. Aly and colleagues occluded skin for five days in a 1978 Journal of Investigative Dermatology study. Average bacterial counts rose from about 180 per square centimeter to 4.5 million by day five. Skin pH rose from 4.38 to 7.05. Water loss rose from 0.56 to 1.87 mg per square centimeter per hour.

Five days is not fifteen minutes. That study shows a direction, not a dose. It explains why the answer to "how long" is not "longer".

How long should you leave a sheet mask on?

Take it off while it is still wet. Across the whole Wang study, redness appeared in 10.71 percent of the 28 subjects and dryness in 57.14 percent. Both showed up most with pure water masks past 25 minutes. The paper reports no separate percentage for each duration.

The authors concluded short use under 25 minutes suited skin. Prolonged use tracked with dryness and redness. Sheet mask packs commonly say 15 to 20 minutes. That instruction is doing more work than it looks.

Why a sheet mask is not a delivery mechanism

A mask changes conditions at the door. It does not build a road. The stratum corneum is a thin sheet of dead cells and lipid. Its job is exclusion. See what the stratum corneum is and transdermal delivery explained.

Compare that with a physical route. Al-Maliki and colleagues tested a microneedling pen on excised human skin in 2026. Their 12-needle protocol created microchannels of 450 microns mean depth, plus or minus 156 microns. The work ran in International Journal of Pharmaceutics. Delivery rose for free 70 kDa dextran, liposome dispersions and 1 micron particles.

One finding in that paper matters more than the depth. Formulation differences between the test systems were more evident on intact skin. Those differences shrank once the microchannels existed. The authors read the physical bypass as the dominant mechanism.

That was excised human skin in diffusion cells, not a home routine. It is not a claim about our device, and it does not describe our device. In that model, the physical route mattered more than the formulation. We report it as published microneedling research and leave it there.

Timing matters too, since channels close. Ogunjimi and colleagues tracked closure by impedance in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology in 2021. They used 800 micron stainless steel needle arrays held under sealed patches, not a pen. Mean closure ran 58 to 63 hours across arm, forearm and abdomen. The same paper notes earlier human work reporting lifetimes of 15 minutes to a few hours without occlusion.

Those figures describe that protocol. Closure time is a property of the needle array, the site and the patch that were tested. We do not extrapolate them to any other device, and we publish no closure figure. Treat the published range as literature, not as a spec for anything we sell.

Can you use a sheet mask and an ampoule together?

Yes, and they do not need the same evening. A mask is a surface event for a dry day or a flight. An ampoule is a dose of a stated active. They are not competitors, and neither replaces the other.

One combination we tell people to avoid is a sheet mask straight after a microneedling session. A sheet mask is not sterile, and prolonged occlusion raises microbial counts and surface pH. Those are the two facts that make the pairing a bad idea. Our aftercare guide and sterilization guide cover what should touch skin in that window.

Safety before technique. Depth, intensity and cartridge settings sit on the device page, not in editorial copy. Skip a session on broken skin, active acne, eczema, a rosacea flare, cold sores or any infection. Skip it entirely with a history of keloid scarring, during pregnancy, on blood thinners, or on recent isotretinoin. Ask a clinician if you are unsure. Read who should not microneedle and microneedling side effects first.

What re:tones sells

We sell the device and the ampoules as one system. The re:tones Tap Pen device runs an 8 micron nano tip. That tip sits on the PRO-5D Nano cartridge. The PRO-R Nano runs a 15 micron tip, the forgiving one. Depth runs 0.5 to 1.5 mm on a collar with no clicks. Six intensity settings, and 6,000 RPM is the ceiling at the top one. Three sterile single-use cartridges in the box, $109.

The ampoules ship in 50 mL crimp-sealed medical glass, $39 each. You open the vial, not a pump that meets air every day.

We state the spec. We make no promise about your result. The rest sits on the science page. Unsure which ampoule fits, take the finder quiz. One ampoule comes 10 percent off with the device. Returns run 30 days on unopened items.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy a sheet mask or an ampoule?

Answer a different question first. What is failing right now? If skin feels tight tonight and you want surface water, a mask does that cheaply. If you want a stated dose of a named active, that is what an ampoule is for. Concentration alone will not change what the stratum corneum lets through.

Can I use a sheet mask after microneedling?

We advise against it. Microneedling leaves skin temporarily compromised, and a sheet mask is not a sterile product. Aly and colleagues measured rising microbial counts and pH under five days of occlusion. That is a longer exposure than any mask, so read it as direction. Keep the hours afterwards simple and leave skin alone. Our aftercare guide has the full list.

Do sheet masks do anything at all?

Yes, within their own job. Occlusion raises stratum corneum water content. The Wang study measured hydration and water loss rising at first, then falling. Its authors concluded that use under 25 minutes benefited skin. That is a surface state, and it is temporary. The format opens no route of its own. Occlusion can raise absorption through the existing route, and it does not choose what it raises. Treat it as comfort, not as a delivery step. Our piece on do serums actually work goes further.

Should the ampoule go before or after a sheet mask?

Thin to thick is the usual order, so a concentrate goes on clean skin first. A mask over the top adds occlusion, which often raises absorption of whatever is under it, including irritants. Go slowly with strong actives under a mask. Our routine order guide and layering guide cover the rest.

How often can you use a sheet mask?

No trial sets a weekly number, so honesty beats a rule here. The evidence points at duration rather than frequency. Wang and colleagues linked wear beyond 25 minutes to dryness and redness in healthy subjects. If skin looks red or feels tight afterwards, the session was too long or too frequent.

Is the leftover essence in the pouch worth using?

It is the same essence, so use it on neck and arms the same evening. Do not save an opened pouch for later. Your fingers and the air both reach it once it opens. No cosmetic pouch is built for repeat entry. That storage question is one reason our ampoules ship crimp-sealed.

Are hydrogel masks better than cotton sheets?

We have no controlled comparison to point you to. The 2024 study compared three mask types. It tested pure water, hyaluronan and bifida ferment lysate. The three arms were defined by their essence, not by the sheet material. Materials differ in how well they cling and how long they stay wet. Treat sheet material as a comfort preference until better data exists.

Can an ampoule replace my moisturizer?

Usually not. Most ampoules are water phase concentrates and carry few occlusive lipids. A moisturizer supplies the lipids and the film that slow water loss after you finish. Our guide to skin barrier repair explains what that film is doing.
