Skin Cell Turnover: What the 28 Day Figure Really Means
Twenty eight days is a textbook average, not a clock your face is running. Where the number came from, what moves it, and what it can honestly time.
Skin cell turnover is the continuous replacement of your outer skin layer. Cells are made at the bottom of the epidermis and flake off the top. The 28 day figure attached to it is a textbook average for young adult skin, not a clock your face is running.
The number matters because half of skincare advice is built on it. Wait one cycle. Give it 28 days. Cycle your actives on a four week rotation. All of that inherits one figure, and the figure varies with age, body site and the state of your barrier. So it is worth knowing where it came from and what it can honestly tell you.
What skin cell turnover is
New keratinocytes are made in the basal layer, at the floor of the epidermis. Each one is pushed upward by the cells produced beneath it, and it changes on the way.
It flattens. It fills with keratin. It builds and then releases the lipids that will become the mortar of the barrier. By the time it reaches the top it has lost its nucleus and become a corneocyte, part of the stratum corneum.
Then it waits, holds the barrier together, and finally releases. Enzymes cut the protein rivets binding it to its neighbours and it leaves one cell at a time. When that shedding works properly you never see it.
The journey has two halves
This is the part the 28 day figure hides. Turnover is not one process, it is two, and they are counted differently.
The first half is transit: a cell moving from the basal layer up through the living epidermis until it becomes a corneocyte. The second half is residence: how long that corneocyte stays in the stratum corneum before it sheds.
Some sources count only transit. Others count the full round trip from birth to shedding. Two people can quote different numbers, both correctly, because they are measuring different things. That alone accounts for a large part of the spread you see quoted.
Where the 28 day figure comes from
Twenty eight days is the classic textbook value for healthy young adult skin, and it survives because it is memorable and roughly the length of a month. It is a useful teaching number.
It is not a measurement of you. Published estimates vary widely depending on method, body site, age and what exactly is being timed, and longer figures are common in careful work on adult skin. Estimates run substantially higher in older skin.
The honest version is this: turnover takes weeks, the number climbs with age, and no single figure applies to every face. Treat 28 days as an order of magnitude, in the same way you treat the thickness of the barrier.
What changes your turnover rate

Note the difference between the last two rows and the rest. Acids act at the top of the stack. Retinoids act on maturation. Neither one makes the basal layer produce cells to order.
What turnover sets the clock on, and what it does not
This is the useful part of the figure. Turnover governs anything that has to be grown out of the epidermis, and governs nothing that lives below it.
- It sets the clock on surface texture. Rough, flaky or uneven surface is a shedding problem, so it moves on a turnover timescale.
- It sets the clock on pigment. Melanin sits inside keratinocytes. Existing pigment has to travel up and shed, which is why fading dark spots is slow even when the ingredient is doing its job.
- It does not set the clock on collagen. Collagen lives in the dermis, below the epidermis entirely, on a far slower schedule of its own. That is covered in what causes wrinkles.
- It does not set the clock on hydration. Water content in the outer layer changes in hours, not weeks.
So when somebody tells you to give a product one cycle, ask which mechanism it is meant to move. If the target is in the dermis, one cycle is not the right unit. Timelines by mechanism sets out the rest.
Why every routine is quoted in four to six weeks
Because that is one turnover cycle plus a margin, and because it is the shortest interval over which a surface change could plausibly appear. It is a floor, not a promise, and it is the same arithmetic behind how far apart to space sessions.
It also explains the classic pattern with retinoids and acids. The first weeks can look worse before they look settled, because you have changed the shedding schedule of a stack of cells that were already on their way up. The stack has to clear before the steady state is visible.
You cannot force turnover much faster
The market sells acceleration. What it mostly sells is earlier shedding at the top, which looks the same for a week and is not the same thing.
Removing cells faster than the basal layer replaces them leaves the barrier thinner, and a thin barrier loses water faster and reacts to more products. That is the failure mode behind most over-exfoliated skin, and barrier repair is the way back out of it.
The tolerable version is to stop working against turnover. Sun protection, fewer surfactants, adequate lipids, and a rate of exfoliation your face can actually sustain.
Turnover and how often to microneedle
Cadence questions come up here constantly, and turnover is only part of the answer. Microneedling opens temporary channels through the stratum corneum, and the barrier begins closing them straight away.
There is one published human figure on that closure, and the site prints it with its caveats. Gupta, Gill, Andrews and Prausnitz, "Kinetics of skin resealing after insertion of microneedles in human subjects", Journal of Controlled Release, 2011, followed ten healthy adults with stainless steel microneedle arrays on the forearm. Without a dressing, the barrier resealed within two hours for every geometry tested. Under a dressing, it took 3 to 40 hours.
Those needles were far wider than the 8 µm array on the re:tones MTS, they were pressed in by thumb, and re:tones has measured nothing of its own here. It is the closest published evidence, not a specification. The science record prints the full caveat.

How to use the number properly
Stop treating 28 days as a deadline and start treating it as a unit. One cycle is the minimum interval over which a surface change could show. Pigment needs several. Collagen is on a different clock entirely.
And a cycle only counts if something arrived. Turnover sets how long a change takes to become visible. It says nothing about whether the molecule you applied ever crossed the barrier. That is a separate question, answered in why your serum is not absorbing and transdermal delivery.

You can change the shedding end of it. Exfoliating acids loosen the bonds holding the outermost cells in place, so they release earlier. Retinoids act on how keratinocytes mature. Neither makes the basal layer produce cells on demand, and pushing shedding faster than production leaves the barrier thinner rather than better.
Is skin cycling based on the turnover cycle?
Loosely. Skin cycling routines rotate actives on a fixed schedule so the barrier gets recovery nights between exfoliation and retinoid nights. The rationale is tolerance rather than turnover timing. The four week framing is borrowed from the 28 day figure, and the figure was never that precise.
Why do dark spots take so much longer than 28 days?
Because you are waiting on two clocks, not one. The ingredient has to reduce new pigment production, and the pigment already sitting inside existing cells has to travel up and shed. Several cycles is the realistic unit, and inconsistent sun protection resets the first clock while you wait on the second.
Does turnover affect how often I should exfoliate?
It sets the ceiling. If you remove cells faster than they are replaced, the outer layer runs thin, water loss climbs and products start to sting. Slower turnover means a lower sustainable frequency, which is why the same weekly routine can suit one person and overwhelm another.
