Why Your Serum Is Not Absorbing, and What Actually Changes That
Your serum is not absorbing because the barrier is working. What has to happen for a molecule to cross, and which advice actually matters.
Your serum is not absorbing because the outer layer of your skin is built to stop it, and it is very good at the job. Skincare absorption is limited by a barrier roughly 15 µm thick that treats a peptide and a pathogen the same way.
That is not a flaw in your routine and it is not a flaw in your skin. It is the barrier working. What follows is what has to happen for a molecule to cross. Then which of the usual advice changes that, and which of it changes nothing.
How skincare absorption actually works
The stratum corneum is the outermost layer of skin, commonly given as 15 to 20 µm on the face. It is usually described as brick and mortar: flattened dead cells are the bricks, a continuous lipid matrix is the mortar.
Nothing about it is designed to admit skincare. It evolved to hold water in and keep everything else out, and it does not distinguish between things you want and things you do not. A molecule crossing it is a molecule that found a loophole in the geometry.
So the question is never whether a serum is good. It is whether a specific molecule, in a specific vehicle, has a route.
The three routes across an intact barrier
There are three, and each is difficult for its own reason.

Most of what you apply takes none of them. It sits on the surface, the solvent evaporates, and the rest transfers to your pillow. That is the ordinary outcome, not the failure case.
Size: the 500 dalton rule of thumb
A widely quoted rule of thumb holds that molecules much above 500 daltons struggle to cross an intact stratum corneum passively. It is a rule of thumb rather than a law, and formulation moves it in both directions.
Still, the numbers are instructive. Niacinamide is about 122 daltons. Tranexamic acid is about 157. Acetyl hexapeptide-8, the peptide in many wrinkle formulas, is about 889 daltons. Hyaluronic acid is a harder case again: a polymer with no single weight at all.
Two consequences follow. Small molecules have a fighting chance on their own. Large ones are largely a formulation and delivery problem, and a bigger bottle does not solve it. re:tones plots the published weights of its own ingredients against that 500 dalton line on its science record, including the ones that land on the wrong side.
What genuinely changes skincare absorption
Short list, and none of it is exciting. These are the levers formulators actually use.
- The molecule itself. Size and oil solubility set the ceiling before anything else happens.
- The vehicle. What the active is dissolved in decides whether it stays available or dries on the surface. This is most of formulation.
- Skin hydration. A hydrated stratum corneum is more permeable than a dry one. Applying to damp skin is not a myth.
- Occlusion. Covering skin holds water in the layer and raises permeability. It is also why heavy creams over an active behave differently.
- pH and ionisation. Many actives cross better in one charge state than another, which is why formula pH is a specification and not a detail.
- Penetration enhancers. Certain solvents and glycols loosen the lipid matrix temporarily. Effective, and dose dependent.
- Barrier integrity. A compromised barrier lets more through, including things you did not intend. That is a problem, not a strategy.
- A physical route. Microchannels bypass the geometry rather than negotiating with it.
Notice what is missing. Price is not on the list. Neither is the number of steps in your routine.
What does not change it
Patting it in. Pressure moves product around on the surface. It does not renegotiate the lipid matrix. Pat if you like how it feels, not because it is doing work.
Face rollers and gua sha. They move fluid and they feel good. They are not delivery devices, and no amount of pressure opens a route.
More layers. The barrier is the limiting factor, not the supply. Adding a fourth serum raises the amount sitting on top, and nothing else.
Price. Concentration and formulation are specifications. A higher number on the box is neither.
Warmth alone. Steam raises hydration briefly, which is real but small. It is not the reason a product did or did not work.
Why "it sank in fast" is not evidence
Fast disappearance usually means volatile solvents evaporating and a small amount of water going into the top layer. Both feel like absorption. Neither tells you an active crossed anything.
The same goes for tingling, which is often pH or a fragrance component. Immediate smoothness is usually a film former sitting on the surface, doing its job.
None of those sensations is a measurement. If you want a measurement, someone has to run a study, and most brands have not.
What a microchannel changes, and what it does not
Microneedling opens temporary channels through the outer layer. That is a fourth route, and a different kind from the three above. It does not depend on the molecule negotiating the lipid matrix.
Here is the honest boundary. A channel is a pathway, not a pump. Nothing pushes product in. Whatever crosses does so by diffusion, and the amount is not something re:tones has measured or claims.
The closest published human evidence on how long such a channel stays open comes from Gupta, Gill, Andrews and Prausnitz, "Kinetics of skin resealing after insertion of microneedles in human subjects", Journal of Controlled Release, 2011. Uncovered skin resealed within two hours across every needle geometry tested. Under an occlusive dressing it took three to forty hours.
Those needles were 200 to 500 µm wide, far wider than a fine home array, and were pressed in by thumb. re:tones does not instruct occlusion and states no closure time for its own channels. The study is context for the question, not an answer about any consumer device.

Why the format of the bottle matters here
There is a second absorption problem nobody mentions, and it happens before the product touches you.
Many actives degrade on contact with air, light or metal. A pump draws air on every stroke and holds residue in the nozzle between uses. Whatever the label says was in there on day one, day sixty is a different question.
That is the argument for a sealed single-integrity format. The re:tones ampoules ship in crimp-sealed medical glass, opened once, by you. It is a consequence of applying to a barrier you have opened on purpose, not a styling decision.
How to tell whether a product is doing anything
Four questions, in order of how much they tell you.
- Is the active at a concentration the brand will print? A named percentage or ppm figure is a specification. "Contains" is not.
- Is the molecule small enough to have a passive route? If it is large, ask what the delivery plan is.
- Is the format protecting it? Air, light and time are undefeated.
- What has the brand measured? A brand that lists what it has not measured is more useful than one with a percentage and no study behind it.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my serum feel like it just sits on my face?
Because most of it does. An intact stratum corneum is a barrier, and the fraction of any topical product that crosses it is small by design. Thicker or richer formulas sit more visibly, which makes the ordinary outcome easier to notice.
Does applying serum to damp skin improve absorption?
A hydrated outer layer is more permeable than a dry one, so applying to damp skin is reasonable advice. The effect is modest and it will not rescue a molecule that is too large to have a route. Treat it as good practice, not as a solution.
Do more expensive serums absorb better?
Price is not a formulation specification. What changes absorption is the molecule, the vehicle, the pH and the format. Any of those can be done well cheaply, or badly at a premium. Ask for the concentration and the delivery reasoning instead of the price.
Can you absorb too much of a skincare active?
Irritation from over-application is common, and it is more likely on a compromised barrier because more is getting through. That is one reason to fix a damaged barrier before adding anything designed to raise permeability. Barrier repair comes first, always.
Does microneedling make serums absorb more?
It opens a route an intact barrier does not offer. How much of a given formula crosses that route is not something re:tones has measured, so no multiple and no percentage appears anywhere on this site. The mechanism is documented on the device record, along with what has not been measured.
Which ingredients actually cross the barrier?
Small, reasonably oil-soluble molecules have the best passive chance, which is why niacinamide and tranexamic acid come up so often.
