Do Serums Work, or Do They Just Sit on Your Face?
Four things have to be true at once before a serum can do anything. Most products meet two of them, charge for all four, and let the price imply the rest.
Do serums work? Some of them do, under conditions most routines never meet, and the rest sit on the surface until you wash them off. A serum is a format rather than a category, so the question cannot be answered by the word on the bottle.

What a serum actually is
A serum is a thin, mostly water-based formula with a high load of active ingredient and little to no occlusive content. That is the whole definition. It is a texture and a concentration, not a promise.
Nothing about that format is regulated. Any product can be called a serum. The word signals lightweight and expensive, and the industry has been happy to leave it there.
The useful comparison is with a moisturiser. A moisturiser carries oils and film formers designed to stay on the surface and slow water loss. A serum drops most of that in order to carry more active in less vehicle. The trade is real, and it is the only genuine reason serums exist.
The four conditions a serum has to meet
One: the ingredient has to do something
There has to be evidence that the molecule affects the target at all. Retinoids, vitamin C, niacinamide and exfoliating acids clear this bar. A long tail of botanical extracts and marketing-led complexes has never been asked to. What the actives actually do covers the shortlist.
Two: it has to be present at a dose that matters
Being on the ingredient list is not the same as being present in a useful amount. Anything below the preservatives is usually there to be printed, not to act. A named active at a stated percentage is a different object from a named active with no number attached.
Three: the vehicle has to release it
An active locked into a formula that will not let it go is inert on your face. Solubility, pH and the rest of the base decide whether the molecule is available at the skin surface. This is invisible on the label and it is where good formulation earns its money.
Four: it has to reach the layer the target is in
This is the condition that fails most often, and the only one you can reason about yourself. The active has to cross the stratum corneum if the thing it acts on lives underneath it.
Miss any one of the four and the product does nothing. Miss the fourth and it can still feel excellent, because the sensory work happens at the surface either way.
Why the percentage on the label tells you nothing
Concentration describes what is in the bottle. It is a statement about the product, not about your skin, and nothing on any label converts one into the other.
Between the pump and the target sit several subtractions. Some of the dose stays on the surface and dries. Some is removed on your hands, your pillow and your collar. Some is bound by the formula and never released. What is left meets a barrier built to refuse it, and only the fraction that crosses counts.
None of those subtractions is printed anywhere. A 20 percent serum and a 5 percent serum can arrive at the same place. A big number on the carton is a claim about the manufacturing, and no claim at all about delivery. The mechanism is set out in why your serum is not absorbing.
Where serums work, and where they do not

Two rows deserve a note. Antioxidants and pigment products can genuinely work, and whether they do turns on which molecule the brand chose, because some forms cross and their larger cousins do not. The label rarely tells you which one you bought.
Half a normal shelf lives in the top three rows, and those products are honest. The bottom rows are where the money goes and where the argument is.
Do serums work better than a moisturiser?
For delivering an active, usually yes, because there is more active and less vehicle in the way. For holding water in the outer layer, usually no, because a serum has given up the occlusive content that does that job.
They are not competitors. A serum carries the active and a moisturiser slows the water loss, which is why the order you apply skincare in puts them where it does. If you own one and not the other you have a gap rather than a preference.
What you are actually paying for
Price in this category tracks packaging, marketing and margin far more closely than it tracks active content. A well made 5 percent niacinamide serum costs very little to produce, and the same molecule appears at both ends of the shelf.
What price can genuinely buy is formulation work: stability for a fragile active, a vehicle that releases it, air-free or single-integrity packaging for something that oxidises. Those are real costs. None of them is signalled by the number on the price tag, and none of them is delivery.
How to judge a serum before you buy it
- Name the active. One molecule you can look up. If the hero is a proprietary complex with no figure, you are buying a name.
- Find the number. A stated percentage or ppm, not "contains".
- Check where it sits on the list. Below the preservatives is a garnish.
- Ask where the target lives. Surface, epidermis or dermis. Use the table above.
- Ask how it gets there. If the target is below the barrier, the product needs an answer to this, and almost none of them have one.
- Check the packaging against the molecule. An unstable active in a clear open jar is a formulation that has already lost.
Question five is the one nobody in the category answers. It is also the one that decides whether questions one to four mattered.
The missing half of the purchase
Count the bottles you quit halfway. You have already paid for products that met three conditions out of four, and the fourth is not something you can fix by applying more carefully or by spending more.

Do serums work without a moisturiser?
They can, but you lose the occlusive step that slows water loss from the outer layer. Serums carry active in a thin base and give up most of the film-forming content that holds water in. In dry air or on dry skin that gap shows up as tightness within a day.
Why does my serum feel like it works when it might not be?
Because the feel is made at the surface. Humectants swell the outer layer within minutes and smooth the light coming off it, and silicones create slip. That is a genuine cosmetic effect and it is a poor proxy for whether an active crossed the barrier.
Does a serum with a higher percentage deliver more?
More applied, yes. More arriving, not necessarily. Concentration is the dose in the bottle, and it says nothing about what crosses the barrier, which depends on the molecule's size, charge and solubility as well as the vehicle. Higher percentages also raise the irritation risk without raising delivery.
Which serums are worth buying, then?
The ones whose target is at or near the surface will do their job as sold: humectants, barrier lipids, exfoliating acids. Below that, ask how the molecule is meant to arrive before you ask what it is meant to do. That single question sorts the category faster than any ingredient list.
